The Aashayein Kidney Foundation (AKF), a non-profit organization was formed by NephroPlus to serve as a platform for people with kidney disease to come together and support each other. It is a way for patients with any kidney disease – on Hemodialysis, Peritoneal Dialysis, transplant recipients or any other kidney disease to get information and support.
AKF organized India’s first ever event for dialysis patients called “Aashayein – Let’s Celebrate Life” on February 6th, 2011 at Hotel Fortune Select Manohar, Hyderabad. This was where the foundation was officially launched by Dr. Gopal Kishen, father of Nephrology in Hyderabad, Joseph Rajashekhar, dialysis patient for the last 18 years along with the directors of NephroPlus. You can read more about the event here.
AKF now organizes “Aashayein” events in different cities annually!
AKF also launched the first newsletter for kidney patients. The newsletter covers the latest from the world of kidney disease. It also gives tips on diet, fluid-control tips, exercise and much more. It also has a section for renal-friendly recipes. The newsletter has a section that explains the role of the kidneys, what dialysis is and other medical information explained in simple language, devoid of jargon so that patient and their caretakers can understand kidney disease and be more informed and proactive about their health.
AKF organizes support group meetings for patients on the last Saturday of the month at 5:00 p.m. at many NephroPlus Centers.
